Pity of War memorial statue

The Pity of War is a charitable trust set up to raise awareness of the impact of war on civilians.  The Pity of War project uses educational initiatives to help people to know the true impact of war on ordinary civilians.   Phase 1 saw the creation of a statue by Peter Walker Sculptor for the nameless, voiceless and forgotten individuals affected by war and conflict which is to be sited in the National Memorial Arboretum in 2023.  The maquette of The Pity of War has been displayed throughout the UK and abroad and copies are now in permanent collections in the following locations:

  • British Embassy, Dubai
  • British Embassy, Paris
  • Chester Cathedral
  • Liverpool Cathedral
  • Sheffield Cathedral
  • University Church, Oxford
  • The City of Limburg an der Lahn, Germany
  • Basilica of Saint Mary, Minnesota, USA

“This is a hugely welcome initiative which should serve as a powerful reminder of the terrible costs of war to civilians. The old saying ‘If war is the answer it must be a very stupid question’ has never been more true than now.”

Paul Rogers, Emeritus Professor of Peace Studies, University of Bradford
